— APV PROJECT —
July 1 - July 29 2009
I spent the month of July living, working, teaching, and studying at the Ashram Paryavarn Vidhyalaya - APV school - in the northern Indian Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. The project was directed by Marc Alongi and Anand Dwivedi and sponsored by Bang On A Can's Young Producer's Project and the Himalayan Mindful Learning Project.
Our initial goal was to introduce APV teachers to various music composition and production elements by learning with work with digital audio software - Ableton Live. I worked primarily with two teachers, Naresh Bhai and Mohan Panwar Singh. The resulting project became something far more complex than any of us had expected. Using field recordings we made of APV and surrounding towns, studio recordings we produced of tabla, harmonium, flute, and mouth percussion, and previously recorded discussions on meditation and education conducted by Chad Robertson for his documentary Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktaye about APV, we created what could be described as both - a half an hour long dynamic guide to meditation through sound, as well as a portrait of the life and world of the ashram through sound and music.
