AUG 09. Hurricane Hotel
Working with artist/writer John K Lawson and director Aimee Michel to develop the music for the theater adaptation of John's first novel Hurricane Hotel. HH has been described as an eclectic love letter to the city of New Orleans that grabs a hold and takes us on a ride into the underbelly of a drowned city destined to be reborn.
The staged reading is being presented as part of the Berkshire Fringe Theater Festival.
JUL 09. Month in Northern India at APV
I spent the month of July living, working, teaching, and studying at the Ashram Paryavarn Vidhyalaya - APV school - in the northern Indian Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. The project was directed by Marc Alongi and Anand Dwivedi and sponsored by the Himalayan Mindful Learning Project and the Young Producer's Project.
Our initial goal was to introduce APV teachers to various music composition and production elements by learning with work with digital audio software - Ableton Live. I worked primarily with two teachers, Naresh Bhai and Mohan Panwar Singh. The resulting project became something far more complex than any of us had expected. Using field recordings we made of APV and surrounding towns, studio recordings we produced of tabla, harmonium, flute, and mouth percussion, and previously recorded discussions on meditation and education conducted by Chad Robertson for his documentary Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktaye about APV, we created what could be described as both - a half an hour long dynamic guide to meditation through sound, as well as a portrait of the life and world of the ashram through sound and music. FEB 09. first fragile album coming soon
I'm very excited to be working on a new album with several severely talented musicians and composers. The album is the third descendant in a series musical creations inspired by the artwork of John K. Lawson who, after loosing much of his life's work in Hurricane Katrina, gave life to a series of works using the salvaged scraps and sketches of his flooded and water-logged past.
The album will feature the talents of the illustrious Joe Bergen (vibraphone, percussion, wineglasses), the outlandish Craig Woodward (percussion, wineglasses), the precocious and prodigious Sam Ryder (soprano saxophone, wineglasses), the adroit Lloyd Dillon (vocals), and the obstreperous Christopher Marianetti (wineglasses, percussion, vocals).
The album is scheduled for release this June but in the meantime check out Fragile Live for more info on the project and performances in NYC!
JAN 09. ableton live sponsorship
The Bang on a Can Education Project works with students in the New York City public school system to create pieces of music exclusively using sounds created, recorded and mixed in the classroom. Our vision is to bring high quality innovative music education to underserved communities, and to inspire tomorrow’s music composers, producers, and audiences. This year, we're proud to announce that software developer Ableton has agreed to sponsor us, providing free versions of its popular Live software for classroom use.

OCT 08. living dark feature film
I'm spending most of the fall composing and recording the score to David Hunt's first feature length film "Living Dark." The movie, a psychological thriller, is based on a mysterious web blog that appeared in 2001 detailing the discovery of an unexplored cave somewhere in North America. The film follows two brothers as they enter into the unknown both physically and psychologically, using the physical space of the cave as a medium for delving deeper into their charged and disturbed emotional past.
To gather material for the score I plan to record with the musicians both in the studio and in tunnels through out New York City parks in order to "echo" and "recreate" environments acoustically similar to those in the film.
SEPT 08. new education program with bang on a can
After a very successful pilot year at Brooklyn Community Arts and Media High School (BCAM), Jeremy Thal and I met with Bang On A Can founders David Lang, Michael Gordon and Julia Wolfe to discuss partnering our new education program with their organization. Now officially adopted as the new education child of Bang On A Can, we are very excited to start our year off as we look to expand to more NYC public schools and continue developing our program.
